Olen Armstrong
Olen David Armstrong, 68, of Englewood, died Thursday night, March 17, 2011, at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
A lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was preceded in death by his father, Olen E. Armstrong, on Nov. 25, 1968. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Englewood, and was a graduate of East Tennessee State University, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He taught school for 13 years in the McMinn County School System at Calhoun High School, where he also coached girls basketball, boys basketball and baseball. He was a well-known cattle trader and was part owner of Tennessee Packers & Processors.
Survivors include his wife, Nita Widener Armstrong of Englewood; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl Armstrong and Barry Kellam of High Point, N.C., and Blythe Maxwell and Ron Thomas of Englewood; his mother, Mary "Bill" Armstrong French of Englewood; and one grandson, Garrett Maxwell of Englewood.
Graveside services were 11 a.m. Monday at McMinn Memory Gardens with the Rev. Russ Maples officiating.
The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Smith Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Heart Hospital, Knoxville, TN 37920.
