Henry William Smith was born on August 19, 1877 in Harmar, Washington County, Ohio. He was the son of John Charles and Christiana (Remmele) Smith.

He grew up with his six siblings in Harmar. He worked as a Carpenter.

He married Anna M Grub on July 10, 1900 in Washington County, Ohio. They divorced on May 3, 1912.

He married Nettie Mason on September 9, 1913 in Wellsburg, Brooke County, West Virginia. Together they had one child: Clara Virginia Smith.

Nettie died on April 1, 1919.

He married Gertrude Redman on September 1, 1920 in Licking County, Ohio. This marriage ended in divorce.

He died at 11:50 AM on January 21, 1952 in Newark, Licking County, Ohio. He had been in failing health for three years. His official cause of death was a "Cerebral Hemmorrhage". He was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery.

At the time of his death he was survived by his daughter, three grandchildren, a sister and two brothers.
