He became a safe-breaker using explosives he stole from quarries. He then blew safes- up and down the country and was arrested a number of times.
Whilst in jail in Jersey in the Channel Island, during the German invasion - he offered to help the Germans with his considerable skill with explosives. Stating he could blow up any target they could name...and he was a resourceful person, who could carry out any type of mission.
The Germans decided to use Chapman and he was parachuted into England - he promptly went to the nearest Police Station and gave himself up. He asked to speak to MI5- he then informed the intelligence service about the Germans and how they planed to use him.
He now became a double agent for MI5 - his task was to feed the Germans false information supplied to him by MI5. He was good at this and was awarded the Iron Cross (The Only British Subject to receive this award.)
He was allowed to keep any money the Germans paid him and he was told by MI5 that any outstanding prison terms against him, would be cancelled.
He was useful in sending the Germans false information about the VI and V2 rockets. He informed the Germans, the destruction was far greater than it actually was, and exaggerated the death toll very considerably. He also directed the aim of the rockets to rural areas.
He led a colourful life after the war - but was never used by MI5 again, he was not very discreet about his income during the war telling a number of his former criminal friends.

A petty criminal, he was in prison in Jersey when it was invaded by the Germans, who trained him as a spy. This potentially despicable man was actually a keen patriot. On being placed in England, he gave himself up and connived with magician Jasper Maskelyne to convince the Germans that he had blown up an aircraft factory. This put him in a good position with the Germans, who wished to introduce Eddie to Hitler. Eddie had told the British that he would commit suicide by killing Hitler, but it did not come off. Eddie Chapman was converted to the British point of view through the efforts of Timothy (tin-eye) Stephens, the famous spy-master, at Latchmere House in Kingston Upon Thames.
