John Stone of Norfolk, Virginia (son of Simon Stone), as a ship-owner and merchant had the title of Captain. He was known in the community as Captain John Stone and as such he appears in the record of his marriage with Elizabeth Keeling on September 26, 1799.

They had the following children: Eliza; John who died young or never married; Henry, who died young and never married; Juliana and Virginia. They also had another child named Juliana who died young (likely in infancy prior to her sister Juliana being born), and a daughter named Leliana who also died young.

Note: the above information was provided by James Duncan Gatewood, MD, USN, Washington D.C. 1911. Captain John and Elizabeth (Keeling) Stone were his great-grandparents, and Virginia (Stone) Duncan, his grandmother who lived with the Gatewood family.

Captain Stone's exact date of death was obtained from the U.S., Navy Casualties Books, Officers and Enlisted Men (Volume 2), 1776-1885.
