The Holton Recorder, Monday, March 8, 1971: SOMMERS
Emma Ellen (Acker) Sommers, the oldest child of Emanuel B. and Julia Ann Acker, was born January 16, 1874 in Blair county near Clover Creek, Pennsylvania. She passed away Sunday morning, February 28, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lillie E. Ball in Holton, at the age of 97 years [1 month] and 12 days.
She came to Kansas when she was nine years old with her mother, two brothers, and little sister. They settled on a farm in Nemaha county, west of America City.
When a young girl, she confessed her Christian faith and joined the Methodist Church, later transferring her membership to the Evangel United Methodist Church in Holton.
On March 9, 1892 Emma was united in marriage to John W. Sommers of Holton. They started housekeeping on a farm west of Holton. March 1, 1910 they moved to a farm east of Mayetta, where they lived and had the privilege of enjoying 54 years of married life together. To this union nine children were born. After her husband's death she moved back to Holton and has been living with her two daughters there.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Sommers who died April 20, 1946, two sons, John Henry and Carl Florentine, and one daughter, Anna K. George.
She leaves to mourn her passing two sons, George C. Sommers and wife, Ax[l?]e, and Walter H. Sommers and wife, Austa, both of Mayetta; four daughters, Margaret E. Saunders and husband, William, of Malin, Oregon, Lillie E. Ball of Holton, Emma E. Tucker and husband, Eli, of LaCresanta, California, and Lydia L. Sacher and husband Karl, of Holton; eight grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were conducted Tuesday, March 2, in the Mercer Funeral Chapel with the Rev. William G. Tudor, minister of the Evangel United Methodist Church, officiating.
Vocal music was furnished by Mrs. Grace Riederer, and Mrs. Helen Hochuli. They were accompanied by mrs. Dean Stous. Pallbearers were Everett Frazier, Max Robson, Bill Zibell, Elmer Fritzsch, David Schirmer and Donald Becker. Interment was in the Holton Cemetery.
