He was the son of Charles E. Ohnmeiss and Susan E. (Wren) Ohnmeiss. He was a foreman for the boiler room at the Hepburn Street dam when it was a power generation station for the Electric Company of Williamsport. His first wife was Kathryn (Miller) Ohnmeiss. She died before John and he later married Frida Campbell. Kathryn & John also raised a child that was born to a sister of Kathryn. The child's name was Jake. Jake was later adopted by a daughter of "Aunt Alta" (Jake Lindsey). Kathryn was a very strict housekeeper and thrifty with her money. No smoking was allowed in the house and the front door was to be used for special company only.
