Louis Shannon "Lou" McManus, 74, died May 2, 2005, at his home in Houston. A memorial service and celebration of life was at the American Legion Post 35, Mile 46 Parks Highway. His ashes will be scattered on Loon Lake by family at a later date. Honorary pallbearers were Shell Ewing, Wayne Johnson, Dave Webster, Matt Mathews, Philip Gardener and Randy DeHart.

Mr. McManus was born May 16, 1930, in Bronson, Mich. After graduating from high school, he joined the Air Force and served six years, where he taught Arctic survival. On July 4, 1953, he met Millie Killian at the Bronson Theater, where she was employed. It was love at first sight, and they were married on Aug. 15. Mr. McManus was an avid Michigan State Spartans fan and "borrowed" their logo for Spartan Builders, Spartan Real Estate, Spartan Roofing, Spartan Jewelry and Gifts, and Spartan Sales and Service. He and Ducky McDonough founded American Legion Post 35, with Mr. McManus as its first commander. He sought and secured the land for a post home and spearheaded construction of the building. He also established a Sons of American Legion and obtained land for American Legion baseball. In a surprise ceremony, it was dedicated in his honor as the Lou McManus Field. His family wrote: "Lou loved and was proud of his family. He loved life, people (and helped many), children and dogs. He enjoyed football, gold mining and camping with family and poker. He won many state fair ribbons for wine making."

Mr. McManus leaves Millie, his wife of 51 years; his sons and their wives, Kelly and Debbie, and their children, David, Kyle and Kevin; Casey and Jennifer and their children, Brady and his wife, Danielle, Tyler, Angeline, Emily, Dustin and Deric; and Kerry and Lisa, and their children, Cassidy and Tiffany; and great-grandchildren, Tristen and Rachel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made for "Trees for Lou" c/o Wayne Johnson at American Legion Post 35 in Wasilla. Proceeds will be used for trees at the Post and/or military gardens.
