Mildred (Millie) Theresa McManus, 78, of Wasilla, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, surrounded by her loving family.

A memorial service in her honor is at 2 p.m., July 14 at Wasilla Christian Church, Mile 2.2, Knik-Goose Bay Road. A celebration of life follows at 3:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post 35, Mile 46, Parks Highway.

Mildred Theresa Rose Killian was born February 20, 1935, in Bronson, Michigan, a daughter of Anthony and Angeline (Wojnar) Killian. Graduating high school in 1953 she met Louis McManus on the July Fourth at the movie theater where she worked. He had been stationed “overseas” in Alaska and just returned home to Bronson. They were married shortly afterwards on August 15 and began a life of many adventures in Florida later that year. Hearing of work in Alaska they decided to seek their fortune and moved to the 49th state with their first-born son.

After building a nest egg, they returned to Florida where Millie had two more sons, but Alaska beckoned and they were off again returning “home” for good. With three young boys in tow they drove from Tampa, Fla., across the U.S. and up the Alaska Highway to Anchorage. Shortly there after they purchased and operated the Spenard Cafe and the Sportsman’s Lounge.

They moved to the Mat-Su valley in 1971 where they had built a cabin at Loon Lake in Houston. Millie partnered with Lou in many enterprises including Spartan Builders, Spartan Roofing, real estate, jewelers and Spartan Services.

Millie loved family gatherings, camping, traveling and holidays. Along with Lou, Millie was very active in the American Legion. She was especially dedicated to the poppy program, which directly benefits disabled veterans.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 51 years, Louis.

Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-laws, Kelly and Debbie, their children David, Kyle and Kevin; Casey and Jennifer, their children Jeremiah, Brady and wife Danielle, Tyler, Derik, Dustin, Angeline and Emily; Kerry and Lisa, their children Cassidy and Tiffany; seven great grandchildren; sisters, Sophie Kruska and Francis Yesh; brother, Richard Killian of Michigan; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to: American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 35 (Poppy Fund), P.O. Box 870370, Wasilla, AK. 99687

Arrangements cared for by Valley Funeral Home and Crematory.
