Abraham Leedy (signed his Will with German spelling of Lidi), a "wheelwright", was born 1748 in Conestoga Twp., Lancaster Co., PA, the 6th of 8 known children to Johannes Leedy [Lidi] and Maria (Mary) Elizabeth (Aeschilmann). As a child he resided on his father's 185 acre fruit farm in Hellam Twp., York Co., PA. He was raised an Anabaptist. In August of 1760 when Abraham was just 12 years old his father died intestate; thus leaving Abraham Leedy as his youngest son. Abraham's oldest brother Jacob Leedy-i, the eldest son, was the customary heir-at-law of the estate. Abraham and his brother Samuel Leedy-i were appointed wards of their brother-in-law Michael Miller when the situation was presented by their mother Mary Elizabeth on 8-25-1761 to the York Co., PA Orphan Court.

Abraham Leedy joined the Continental Army 6-27-1778, under the command of Cpt. Kershrer's Co., Washington Co., MD. He served as a non-combatant for religious reasons and was assigned to interpret communications between the Cont. Army and the Hessian prisoners held at Ft. Frederick, MD. Later in 1778, tradition tells us that Abraham Leedy married Catharine Long (1759-1837) the daughter of John Nicholas Long and Anna Catharina (Studebaker) Long at Baker's Lookout, Washington Co., MD. From 1778-1788 Abraham and Catharine Leedy made their 1st home amongst the Long family of Broadfording, MD.

About 1788 Abraham Leedy, wife Catharine and 4 or 5 young children according to family tradition, moved from Washington Co., MD to "Morrison's Cove" in Woodbury Twp., Bedford Co., PA on horseback. On 12-14-1805 Abraham Leedy purchased his last home on 341.5 acres of land situated on the headwaters of Yellow Creek, Woodbury Twp., Bedford Co., PA. The 3-story brick home has been referred to as the "Mansion House", containing Abraham's wheel shop on the east side. Family tradition indicates that Abraham was a small, slender man and that in years before his death he had become blind.
