Dr. Walter E. Russell, aged 55 years, pioneer physician of this city died about 6 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, 20 East Sumach Street following a long illness caused by cancer. He had recently undergone a surgical operation performed by the Mayo Brothers in Rochester, Minnesota, and never regained his strength, although he was about attending to some of his practice up till a few days ago. Dr. Russell was born in Milledgeville, Illinois in 1858 and lived there until a young man, receiving his early education in the public schools of that city. During the time intervening between his twentieth and 25th year he was engaged in the dual occupation of farming and teaching school and then entered Hahnemann Medical College of Chicago, a homeopathic institution, where he received his degree as a doctor of medicine in 1889. He returned soon afterward and took two years in post graduate work and then came to this county, locating first in Waitsburg. He spent one year there and then came to Walla Walla, where he has been since. During his residence in this city Dr. Russell has been an active, useful citizen, He served a number of years as city health officer and was one of the board of education for many years, resigning only last spring when he went east for his health. He was a member of the Masonic and A.O.U.W lodges and at one time served as grand foreman of the state. Dr. Russell was married in Walla Walla in 1898 to Mrs. N. S. Garrard, a native of California, and she survives him. - from Walla Walla (WA) Union, 8/29/1913, page 5.
