E.J. was born early after his mother had gone out and cared for a sick neighbor and become ill herself. It caused her to have an early birth of the baby she was carrying. She died Dec. 21, 1918 shortly after giving birth. Her name was Elizabeth Jane and they gave him the names Clarence E. but called him E.J. for her initals. A cousin Perry Ponder and his wife Martha, who lived near came and got E.J. and took him home with them. Cousin Martha Featherson Ponder had a collection of baby doll clothes and beds and used them for E.J. She dressed him warm put him in the doll crib using doll blankets for cover and put him near the fireplace. They did not think he would live. He remained with the until his father remarried in 1920. E.J. was the youngest of 11 children. His father married again to a widow with 5 children and they had 5 more children together. E.J. had lots of children to play with. E.J. served in WWII as a private in the Coast Artillery Corps. He married Dessie Churchman shortly after the war. They lived in Henderson Co, Texa. He died suddenly in Eustace, Henderson Co, Texas at the age of 38 on Sept. 24, 1957. He and Dessie had no children.
