May 1964. One of Stephen F. Austin Elementary School's most beloved and devoted teachers, Miss Alma Butler, will retire following the final day of school Friday the 29th, after teaching elementary students for 31 years.
Miss Butler graduated from Woden High School and later taught first grade in the Woden Elementary School for three years while studying at Stephen F. Austin College in Nacogdoches.
After receiving her BS degree from SFA in 1936 she taught first grade in Tarkington Prairie for one year and in Huntington for seven years before coming to Dayton in 1944. The first twelve years in Stephen F. Austin Elementary she taught first grade students and for the past six years she has taught the third grade.
While teaching in Dayton she earned a Masters degree at the University of Houston.
Miss Butler will make her home at the family home in Nacogdoches which she and her sister, Miss Ada Butler, own. She plans to just relax, enjoy life and travel some, after devoting the past 31 years in helping to mold the character of the many hundreds of students she has lovingly and devotedly instructed.
