Shirley Sawyer of Monkey Island, Oklahoma, went to be with Jesus March 31, 2011. She was born in Winfield, Kansas on September 23, 1938, to Jess and Mildred Taylor. Shirley ten years as an Air Force wife, then worked at the Winfield State hospital, Cessna Aircraft and owned her own trophy shop. She and Gene managed and operated an airport in Lyons, Kansas prior to retiring to Monkey Island in 1999.


Shirley was involved in the Grove Rotary Gold Tournaments, Grove Citizens Police Academy VIPS organization and was a First Responder with the Monkey Island Fire Department. She also served as President and Secretary of MIFD Women's auxiliary and was on the Jana Jay festival staff. She was Secretary and Treasurer of the Port Duncan Owners Association and worked admissions at Harbor Village.


She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Gene Sawyer, three sons and their wives, as well as many grandkids and great grandkids.


She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Oral of El Dorado, Ks.


Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 4, 2011, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
