The First Metropolitan of the Syro-Malabar Hierarchy, Monsignor Augustine Kandathil was born in Chempu, near Vaikom, in Kottayam, Kingdom of Travancore.

The first Indian to assume powers and reign as an Archbishop of the Catholic Church, Kandathil was ordained to the priesthood at the Papal Seminary of Kandy on December 21, 1901.

Appointed Coadjatur with right of succession to Mar Aloysius Pazheparambil for the Apostolic Vicariate of Ernakulam at the early age of 37, Kandathil received his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Arad on December 3, 1911, from Patriarch Ladislao Michele Zaleski.

Succeeding to the Vicariate on December 9, 1919, following the demise of Bishop Pazheparambil, he was nominated Archbishop of Ernakulam, when the Syro-Malabar Hierarchy was established by the Apostolic Bull "Romani Pontifices" by Pope Pius XI, on December 21, 1923.

The Archbishop received the pallium on November 16, 1924, at the Cathedral of Ernakulam from Monsignor Alexis Lépicier, Apostolic Visitor to India.

Archbishop Kandathil opened new avenues of apostolate in keeping with the changing times. As a token of special consideration and appreciation the Holy Father conferred upon him the titles of assistant at the Pontifical Throne, Domestic Prelate and Roman Count.

Senior founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of Nazareth in 1948, the Archbishop passed away on January 10, 1956, aged 81, after having received the last rites from the hands of his Auxiliary, Monsignor Joseph Parecattil. On January 12, his body was interred in the Sanctuary of the Metropolitan Church, where it rested until March 1974, when his remains transferred to the Sanctuary of the New Basilica in March 1974.
