Grave #21 - Maj Joshua Benson (1753-1805)
A soldier in the Revolution, his is one of the oldest marked graves in the cemetery; he was appointed in 1797 as one of the first commissioners of streets and markets for the Town of Columbia.

Inscription


Sacred to the memory of Major Joshua Benson who survived in the Revolutionary War and departed this life the 17th Oct, 1805.
In the 53rd year of his age
Also, Mary, his wife, who died 13th Sept, 1813.
they were amongst the earliest settlers in Columbia.
They left many friends, and only one daughter to mourn their exit.
