Georgia Bulldogs team mascot. Uga V officially began his reign as the Georgia mascot taking over after his father Uga IV passed away. He received all the perks accorded to a Bulldog mascot...When on the Georgia campus, the mascot lounged in an air conditioned doghouse near the cheerleader's platform at Sanford Stadium as hot weather bothers the breed. He had his own official student ID card and flew free, courtesy Delta Airlines. His cuisine consisted of the best cuts of meat, usually steak. During his tenure, the animal became the top sports mascot in the land. He was seen at every home Georgia football game leading the team onto the field wearing his jersey designed from the same cloth as the players and an exact replica. He graced the cover of Sports Illustrated and was a featured story in Playboy Magazine. V.was seen nationally in Coca Cola television commercials as well as newspaper and magazine ads. He did a cameo appearance in the Clint Eastwood movie 'Midnight Garden of Good and Evil' which was made in his hometown of Savannah. He was the 1st honorary member of the UGA National Alumni Association but gained national attention in 1996 when he lunged toward Auburn receiver Robert Baker as he ventured too close on the side lines during a game. The photo appeared in every major newspaper sports section in the land. Becoming infirmed, V made his last appearance on the sidelines of Sanford Stadium on September 11th and his replacement VI was introduced. Two months later, he died at his home in Savannah. Following a lavish funeral tribute, Uga V joined his forbearers and ancestors I, II, III and IV in the Sanford Stadium Uga mausoleum consisting of marble vaults located near the main gate with a statue of Uga I nearby. Each crypt has a bronze tablet with an epitaph outlining the dogs achievements. The University of Georgia is the only major college that actually buries its mascots within the confines of the stadium. The Aggies of Texas A&M have a burial site for its mascots but is located outside their stadium. Before each home game, flowers are placed at the site. The memorial plot attracts thousands of fans and visitors each year. History of the Uga line at Georgia...The tradition began when a bulldog owned by the Frank W. Seiler family of Savannah was taken to their alma mater, the University of Georgia to a football game. Noticed by school officials who surmised the animal would be a perfect mascot for the Georgia Bulldog football team. Asked...and were given permission. The dog became Uga I (Uga-abbreviation University of Georgia) the first team mascot. The family has continually provided mascot dogs from their line of white English bulldogs to the school ever since 1954. Over the years, Uga has been featured in many magazines: Newsweek, Time and Sports Illustrated. Appearances have been made at the White House, the Georgia House and senate, the Cotton Bowl Parade The Final Four Basketball tournament, the Heisman Trophy presentation dressed in a Tux. When not on duty at games or working as a good will ambassador for the college, he lives with his owner Frank Seiler in Savannah.
