Adam married Anna Katharina Nieding Dec. 11, 1869 in Chatsworth, Livingston, Illinois. Together they had 9 children: Christian, Elizabeth "Lizzie", Anna Katherine, Anna Sophia, Amelia Margaret, Edward Adam, Charles F., Bert George and lena Mary.
The story goes that his mother had him hide under her long skirts when the ships purser came around to count the passengers, so his mother did not have to pay passage for him.
Adam and Katharina resided on rented land in Germanville Twp for five years after their marriage. They then purchased 80 acres of partially improved land in Section 27, Chatsworth Twp.,in Livingston County. For many years he owned and operated a corn sheller and threshing machine.
