OBITUARY:
SHELBYVILLE - Jesse M. Browning, age 76, died at noon today at the home of his son, Roy Browning, at the south edge of the city. He had been ill for a number of years and suffered a stroke Sunday. He was born in Johnson County on February 15, 1870, the son of Albert and Elizabeth Stewart Browning. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Frances Hagerman in Johnson County on July 8, 1888. Surviving with the widow and the son at whose home he died, are two other sons, Ralph of Linton, and Ray of Franklin; two brothers, John of near Greenwood, and Charles, of Indianapolis; 24 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He resided with the son in Shelbyville for the past 20 years. He was a member of the Smith Valley United Brethren Church. Funeral services will be held at 1;30 p.m. Friday, at the home of the son here, with the Rev. E.L. Bates officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Greenwood. Friends may call at the son's home after noon Thursday. Jesse Melvin Browning and Mary Frances Hagerman were married July 8, 1888 at the home of her parents in Johnson Co., IN, by Rev. John Scott. They moved into the Browning family farm with Jesse's parents. Their children, Ralph, Ray, and Roy were born in this house. The farm was 180 acres, and the house had 3 stories. This farm was located at Stone's Crossing, Johnson Co., IN. Jesse owned a grocery store in Stone's Crossing called, "Browning Grocery".
