Alexander Faries was born in Smyrna, Delaware in 1807, and attended the public schools there. At the age of eighteen he went to Philadelphia and learned undertaking. He completed his training in 1831, returned to Smyrna, and started his business on Main street between Commerce and South streets. His business started out slowly but with encouragement and aid from others as well as his own enterprising spirit, the business was soon profitable. In 1868 he started a partnership with his two sons, William and Isaac, and changed the name to A. Faries & Sons. It went under this name until he died in 1872. After he died the business was carried on by his sons under the name "W. A. Faries and Bro".

Alexander Faries married Mary Jester on November 20, 1832. She was a daughter of Isaac and Elender Jester. Their children were: Mary, Eliza, Sarah, Thomas, Alexander, William, and Isaac. Thomas and Alexander died in infancy and Mary died at age 20. Sarah and Eliza never married or had children but lived normal life spans. Isaac married Emily Jefferson and had three children. William married Georgianna Maree and had four children.

Alexander was a member and grand master of the Morning Star Lodge (No. 46) of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of Smyrna. In politics, he was first a Whig and then a Republican. He was pronounced in his views, but never an office-seeker. He was also an active and influential member of his church.

Alexander Faries died in Smyrna and was buried in Glenwood Cemetery, but in 1884 was reinterred in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. His wife died in October, 1884, and was buried beside him.
