Charles Hartman Hanawalt was the fifth of nine known children of George Swigart Hanawalt (1831-1913) and his third known wife, Lucinda "Muzzie" Stutzman (1851-1929), who married 04 Jun 1874 at Mattawana, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. George was first married to Caroline Matilda McKee (1837-1858) on 09 Nov 1856 in Pennsylvania, with whom he had one known child. After Caroline died, George remarried to Barbara Brumbaugh Replogle (1842-1873) on 01 Feb 1860 near New Enterprise, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. with whom he had nine known children.

Charles married Laura Bell Webster (1893-1987) on 18 May 1921 at Burbank, Los Angeles County, California. Charles and Laura were the parents of six known children, namely:

1. Genevieve Ruth Hanawalt (1922-2005)
2. Charlotte Pearl Hanawalt Glouser (1924-p1992)
3. Howard Webster hanawalt (1925-2012)
4. living son Hanawalt (1927-???)
5. living son Hanawalt (1928-???)
6. living daughter Hanawalt (1933-???)
