James A "Bunt" Whaley was born Oct. 12, 1860 in Sevier County, Tennessee. James was the son of Isaac William Whaley and Hulda "Ogle" Whaley.

James first marriage was to Sarah Whaley, daughter of Aaron Whaley and Sarah Elmira "Sally" Ownby-Whaley. James and Sarah were married in Sevier County, Tennessee March 18, 1877. (Story is, Sarah died when her first child was born)

James remarried Rebecca "Phoebe" Irene Whaley, daughter of Pinkney Henry Toomey Whaley and Julia Marinda Brackins-Whaley

James and Phoebe had the following Children;

1. Pinkney Humphrey Mayfield Whaley
2. William McPherson "Mack" Whaley
3. Perry Garfield Whaley
4. Julia Malissa Whaley
