Born c.1640 in Milford, Connecticut, Nathaniel Wheeler was the son of Thomas Wheeler. In June 1665 he married Esther Botsford, also of Milford. One of the founding fathers of the city of Newark, NJ, and later of the settlement of Orange, farther west, in 1723 he donated land for a burial ground at the First Presbyterian Church of Orange, and was interred in it 3 years later, when he died in his 87th year. His brown sandstone stele, located on the eastern side of the church, has a plain tympanum with a scalloped border and spells his name as "NATHANAEL WHELER". It reads:

"Here lies the Body
of Nathanael Wheler
Who Departed this
Life October the 4th
Anno Domini 1726
And in the 87th year
of his Age."
