Mrs. Bessie Mitchell Byrd, 68, of 1508 Baker Rd., died Monday morning in High Point Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health seven years.
Mrs. Byrd was born Aug. 1, 1906 in Wilkes County, a daughter of John and Sis Holloway Mitchell. She had been a resident of the High Point area the past 50 years and was a retired employee of Mr. Apparel Inc. Mrs. Byrd was a member of Uwharrie Missionary Baptist Church, the Sunday School, and the Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Gospel C. B. Club. In 1927 she was married to Sears Jackson Byrd, who died July 6, 1970.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. John R. (Virginia) Lucas of Route 5; six sons, John William Byrd of Memphis, Ark., Richard Fred Byrd of 907 Worth St., Robert Byrd of 1806 Walton St., James Ronald Byrd of 322 Louise St., Thomas D. Byrd of Route 5, and charles Douglas Byrd of 1508 Baker Rd., 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Dock Mitchell of Wake Forest and Titch Monroe Mitchell of Filbert Street; and three sisters, Mrs. Fannie Hayworth of Clearwater, Fla., Mrs. Julia Wray of Wilkesboro, and Mrs. Nellie Frances Griffith of North Wilkesboro.
Funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m., in Cumby Chapel by the Rev. Tommy Worrell, the Rev. Jewell Segers and the Rev. Keith Letterman. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will remain at Cumby Mortuary until placed in the chapel 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will be at the funeral home tonight 7 until 9.
