Barrington Union Cemetery (AKA Henry Smith Cemetery)
History
Henry Smith deeded 1.03 acres from his farm for the cemetery. The original deed was recorded on July 5, 1866, for a sum of $1.00. Barrington Union Cemetery Association was formed in September 1866. At one time there was a Lithuanian Cemetery Society. In 1963, a 20-foot easement was added. In 1979, according to Opal Helm, there were about 100 graves. Very little upkeep was done over the years, except for the Helm and Jackson plots. Vandals and the encroaching forest destroyed many graves. In 1983, the Barrington Township trustees took over the maintenance of the cemetery. Some graves date from the Civil War and bear Barrington pioneer names (e.g., Freeman, Helm, and Jackson).

Ellen's 1950 Census from Barrington, Cook, Illinois, USA, shows her parents Sally A. and Henry Smith, both age 39 and both being born in New York. This is how I got their birth years of 1911. Of course it could be off by one year, but this is as good as you'll get probably since I can't find a marriage document for them. All their children in this census are born in Illinois except Francis born 1834 in NY. Sally's death year is found in US federal Census Mortality Schedules index as dying in 1850, and puts her age as 39...which is also about 1811. It appears that the document says she died of a "combination diseases" and "unk". This document also said she was a farmer's wife. It says she died in Cook County, IL. Henry's death document says he died January 28, 1886 in Elgin, Kane, IL and puts his age as 74. Since it was just the beginning of the year, he likely hadn't had his birthday, and this would also put him born about 1811.
