Born into a very Catholic family, he had three sisters and no brothers. He was married to Edna Smith on 29 Feb 1940 in Philadelphia, and their first daughter was born in December of that year. They had a very tumultuous marriage, and after the birth of their second daughter, Edna left.
When Joseph joined the war effort, he left his daughters to be raised by his mother and sisters.
Evelyn was his third wife. With her, he had no children.
