She was born in Shelby, NC a daughter of the late John and Mamie Toms and was a graduate of Shelby High School and attended Lees McRea and Appalachian Colleges. She worked at Duke University as the secretary for Dr. Guy L. Odum, Chief of Neurosurgery and retired in 1981. The Neurosurgical residents made her an honorary member of their organization, The OWLS. This meant a great deal to her since she had worked so closely with them during their years at Duke. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church. Miss Toms was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, John and Roy and sister, Ruth.
Survivors include cousins and her special friends, Alfred and Bonnie Johnson and Martha Lee Covington.
