Nicholas was born in Scotland in 1731. He first settled in Concocheauge Valley, and was married to Jane McClelland, native born. He settled in Conemaugh township in 1773, was driven off the land by Indians, who destroyed his cabin. He returned to the area. The children of Nicholas and Jane: William b. 1774, died 1851, m. Mary Lytle, b. 1776 and died 1863; John b. April 9th 1776, died 1865, m. Martha Katon; Elizabeth m. James Matthews; Margaret md. first to John Matthews and 2nd to James Oliver; Mary m. Samuel Craven; Nancy m. Moses Thompson; Jane m. Alexander McGaughey; Archibald m. Margaret Jamison; Robert m. Elizabeth McLane; Sarah; James b. 1795 and d. 1857 m. Mary Campbell.
