After serving 2 years in the Navy aboard the USS Abbot (DD 629), he attended and graduated from NCSU with a BS in Forestry. His 40-year career was spent with the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the Division of Forest Resources, becoming Section Chief for Forest Protection before his retirement in 1993.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Joseph Glenn Roten, Gwyn Roten, Edward Roten, and his sister Elva Bumgardner. Mr. Roten is survived by his wife Vera Roten of Raleigh, son Randy Roten of Franklinton, daughter Dana Weaver and husband Charles Weaver of Raleigh, 2 brothers (George Dewey Roten, Jr. of West Jefferson and Ray Roten of Raleigh), sister Mary Bare of West Jefferson, and granddaughter Audrey Weaver.
To honor his memory, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org. His life was lived in service to his family, his country, and his home state. He lives on in our hearts.
Services were held this past Saturday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Millbrook Road.
