Norma J. Slater, 75, of Meridian died Sunday in her home after an extended illness.
Born Nov. 1, 1932, she was the daughter of Harry Edward and Violet Lucille (Riding) Brown.
Norma worked for 19 years as a switchboard operator before retiring in 1990.
She was a lifetime member of St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church in Meridian and the St. Fidelis Christian Mothers. Norma was instrumental in fundraising for building the St. Fidelis Church on Buttercup Road.
She was the first secretary of the Mother's Club of the Butler Area Midget Football League and served as the treasurer for the music committe of the Meridian Fife and Drum Corps. Norma also was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, who loved to bake, cook and care for her family. She loved animals and enjoyed bird watching, gardening, crocheting, sewing and reading.
She is survived by two sons, Gary Slater and his wife, Cher, and Gavon Slater; four daughters, Georgia Slater, Gloria Yaracs and her husband, Andy, Glenda Kelly and her husband Patrick, and Gail Slater; five grandchildren, Aaron and Adam Yaracs, Shane and Seth Slater and Nicole Rivera; one great grandchild, Montana Vanderzee; one sister, Marsha (Brown) Giles of Beaver Falls; her chidren's father and friend, George "Red" Slater; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Bebe (Brown) Hempfling; and a step-sister, Avanell (Brown) Scott.
Friends of Norma J. Slater, who died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home. Servioes will be on Wednesday at St. Fidelis Church in Meridian. Interment is Butler County Memorial Park.
