Tabor City - Hartford Fowler, 97, a well-known retired educator and rural letter carrier of Tabor City, died early Thursday, Sept. 5 at Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville.

Mr. Fowler was a native of Tabor City but had resided with a daughter, Mrs. James G. Warlick on North Franklin Street in Whiteville for the past 14 years.

He was the son of the late Charles and Mary Elizabeth Brown Fowler and was the husband of Mrs. Viola Grainger Fowler, who preceded him in death in 1971.

Mr. Fowler was first an educator in both North and South Carolina, serving as a teacher and principal in both Columbus and Horry County, S.C. for about a dozen years.

He later became an employee of the U.S. Postal Service and served as a rural mail carrier out of the Tabor City Post Office for 32 years, retiring in 1952. Practically all of his many years of postal duties were fulfilled in serving the patrons of Route 2, Tabor City.

A daughter, Mrs. Warlick, said that Mr. Fowler began his carrier work during the "horse-and-buggy" days and later as progress came to the area, he used a Model-T Ford for his deliveries.

During those early days, with "hard times" prevalent and few autos and few good roads, travel by patrons to town for shopping was infrequent. Therefore, Mr. Fowler, as the "mail-man" was often asked to brin his patrons a spool of thread or even a piece of cloth on his next trip out; such favors he fulfilled many times in his years of postal service.

Mrs. Warlick also spoke of the times "being so hard on some people that they just couldn't come to town to shop."

Especially around Christmas it was difficult for holiday shopping to be done in person and many of them used mail-order catalogs to purchase their Christmas "Santa Claus" for their children.

Many times, after Mr. Fowler had made his last regularly scheduled postal trip on Christmas Eve, he would return to the post office to find that packages had arrived for patrons on his route and, weary though he was from a long day's work, he would make extra trips - some after dark - to see that his patrons received their childrens' toys in time for Christmas. This thoughtful deed no doubt brightened the Yuletide many times for the persons living along Route 2, Tabor City, which then extended well into Horry County, S.C. below Green Sea and into the Floyds' area.

Mr. Fowler's life evolved around his work and his church, as well as his family. He was the oldest living member of Tabor City Baptist Church at the time of his death. He had held practically every office in the church and had been awarded an honorary membership as a lifelong Deacon some years ago. He was also a longtime member of the Tabor City Masonic Lodge.

Final rites for Mr. Fowler were held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Tabor City Baptist Church by the Rev. Dan Deaton and Dr. Roger Gilbert with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery, also near Tabor City.

Survivors include his daughters, Mrs. Evelyn F. Warlick of Whiteville and Mrs. Flora F. Price of New Bern; brother, Levi Fowler of Route 3, Whiteville; sister, Mrs. Florence Fipps of Tabor City; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchilren.

Active pallbearers were Clarence Willoughby, Harry Stevens, Lonnie Hinson, Allen Wright, Boyce Todd and Rudolph Todd.
