Richard Pettit is the son of James and Phebe (Gritman?) Pettit. His father (James b. 1779-1852) is likely the son of Joshua Pettit and Sarah (see photo of St. George's Episcopal Church records with Joshua and Sarah's three boys being baptized in 1782.) He left Hempstead in the 1840's for Illinois where he married his wife. Richard became a Mormon either while in New York or Illinois. He continued west to Utah in the 1850's
