Johann "John" Heinrich Wilhelm Bauck was born in Bollensen, Hanover Province, Germany, on 28 Aug 1844; son of Joachim Wilhelm Bauck and Catharine Dorothea Elisabeth Lange.

Around 1866 or 1867 John traveled to the United States and settled on a farm in Will County, Illinois near the town of Beecher. He was united in marriage 09 Jun 1867 in Will County, IL with Dorothea Marie Strampe; daughter of Heinrich and Catherine Dorothea (Schultz) Strampe.

After their marriage, John and Dorothea lived on the farm in Will County, Illinois. John's brother Fred had also came over from Germany and was working for a farmer in the area. Around 1873 the brothers and their families moved to Nebraska where they lived for about 2 years before coming to Minnesota and settling in Gorman Township about 3 miles NW of Perham in Otter Tail County.

John and Fred were involved in starting a church in the area. Three log buildings were built on the north side of the "Bauck Cemetery". One was used for church and parochial school. The other two were the minister's home and a barn for the horses. This congregation later joined with another group in Perham to form St Paul's Lutheran Church.

John was known to loan money to several other German families to come here from Germany. They normally worked off their loans. John went back to Germany to get his father, Joachim, and brought him back to live on the family farm in Gorman Township.

John and Dorothea were the parents of 7 children:

5. Mary born (1878-1925) never married
6. Martha D. born 1880 married Henry Mathias Young
