Roy Turner's Mother Dies. Mrs Henrietta Louise "Etta" Turner Grimm, mother of former Governor Roy J. Turner, died Thursday, July 15, 1971, at her home, 612 NW 45. She would have been 100 years of age July 31. Widowed for the first time at 39, the Oklahoma pioneer woman sold the family livery stable in Lincoln County to send her only son, Roy, then 15, away to business school. After Turner was elected Governor in 1945, his mother always took credit for the election.
Also surviving is daughter, Mrs. Viola B. Greer, of the home. A second daughter, Mrs. Lena Clark, died in 1938. Services are pending with Hahn-Cook-Street & Draper Funeral Home. The family suggest memorial contributions be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Mrs. Grimm was born Etta Louise Rogers in Independence, Missouri, July 31, 1871. She grew up in Independence and it was there she met Reason Turner, an adventurous young man who married her and whisked his bride off to the newly-opened Sac And Fox lands of Indian Territory. The couple homesteaded in Lincoln County in 1891 and three years later, their first child, a son, was born. The two girls, Viola and Lena, followed.
Turner operated a livery stable in the town of Kendrick, a town which his said has almost dried up. It was six miles north of Davenport and no longer even has a post office. In 1909, Turner died and his widow sold the livery stable for $600. She took $100 of that and sent Roy to Hill's Business School in Oklahoma City, believing he could improve his business education faster there than in the Kendrick High School. Mrs. Grimm and the girls moved into Davenport for a year, then joined Roy in Oklahoma City in 1912.
In 1918, Etta married George Grimm of Clear Lake, Iowa and lived there until about 1930 when Grimm died. By that time, Viola Turner had married Charles Greer, a career Army man, and Mrs Grimm went to Hawaii to live with the couple while they were stationed there. In the mid 1930's, Greer retired from the Army as a colonel and he and his family settled in Tulsa. Mrs. Grimm returned to Oklahoma City. Mrs. Grimm lived at the Governor's mansion while her son was governor.
In 1956, Mrs. Grimm broke her hip and it was then that her daughter, Viola, then widowed, moved to the capitol city to help care for her. Until recent years, she was active in several clubs and was a long-time member of Crown Heights United Methodist Church. She was getting along just fine until about three years ago when she was out shopping and another car collided with her cab. She never fully recovered from the lengthy hospitaliation required for treatment of the broken knee and leg she sustained in that accident.
Mrs. Grimm was the middle of seven children and outlived all of them. Survivors besides her children include six grandchildren: Roy W. "Bill" Turner, Oklahoma City; Mrs. Betty Olsen, Midland, Texas; Mrs. James Marsh, Madrid, Spain; Charleen Saunders, Chicago, Illinois; Charles Greer Jr., Oklahoma City; and Mrs. Elizabeth Craig, Lincoln, Nebraska; and 18 great-grandchildren.
