HOLYOKE: Ruth E. (Dick) Bell, age 88, of Needham, formerly of Holyoke and Chicopee, died Sunday, April 17, 2011 in Needham. She was born in Hoosick, NY, daughter of the late George and Edna (Brock) Dick, and was a 1940 graduate of Bennington High School in Vermont. Ruth was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II., and was a longtime Bookkeeper at Marcotte Ford in Holyoke, retiring in 1985. She had been employed at the former Corey Oldsmobile in Holyoke, Robbins Publishing, and Standard Greetings Company, and had also been a waitress at the former Valley Arena. She was a former communicant of St. Anne Church in Fairview, was a life member of Holyoke American Legion Post 351, and was the former President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Holyoke Golden Agers. Ruth was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Walter F. Bell earlier this year, and a son, Walter F. Bell, II, in 1996. She is survived by 2 daughters, Barbara A. Degon and her husband Stephen of Punta Gorda, FL, and Kathleen R. Mazza and her husband Robert of Dedham, 5 grandchildren, Michael, Carolyn, Alison, Shaun, and Christine, a great granddaughter, Charley, and 1 sister Evelyn Rabideau of Petersburg, NY. The funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, followed by a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will be in St. Jerome Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Monday morning from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
