Arthur Clough, 72, was conscientious and serious-minded. He was robbed of the family's crop money at Glencoe Springs when he stopped to water the mule. He was knocked unconscious and dragged home by the mule. He had health problems for the remainder of his life following the attack. He was described by his daughter Annie Belle as being a gentle, kind man who was seldom angry but his other children describe him as strict. The family farmed in Etowah County, Alabama. Arthur was a twin with Luther Clough who died at birth.
