Floyd County Times Friday, Febuary 14, 1936 Issue- Irvin Hicks crushed to death by motor at West Garrett Tuesday. Crushed beneath a mine motor and a coal car inside the mines of the Wells Elkhorn Coal Company at West Garrett, his skull fractured and his back broken, Irvin Hicks, 25 years old, motor brakeman, was instantly killed Tuesday morning at 10:45 o'clock. The tragedy occurred, it is said when Hicks leaped from the motor and his foot slipped as he was attemping to throw a switch. The body was prepared for burial by G.D. Ryan and funeral rites were conducted Thursday from the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hicks, West Garrett. Burial was made at Garrett. Besides his parents, young Hicks is survived by 7 brothers and 2 sisters. ***************************************** Son of Alfred and Dora Ellen (Bolen) Hicks. Siblings included Elbert Hicks, Lawrence Hicks, Mitchell Hicks, John M Hicks, Millie (Hicks) Dudley, Millard "Peachy" Hicks, Bert Hicks, Polly (Hicks) Hayes, Orville Hicks. His wife was Crosey (Sexton) Hicks and their children were Carl Roy and Ervin Luther Hicks.
