Regis E. Brubaker, 81, Moore, Okla., died Wednesday at home after suffering from Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease for years.

He was born in Duncansville, the fifth child of the late Ord and Lista (Hoover) Brubaker.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce; a daughter, Debra Stellar and husband, John, of Fort Worth, Texas; four sons: David and Deron, both of Moore, Okla., Daryl of Oklahoma City and Duane of Queens, N.Y.; four grandchildren: Lori Kimbrough, Traci Merriman and husband, Chad, Lynne Fernandez and husband, Joe, and Denyse Goines; and nine great-grandchildren: Mason Kimbrough, Tyson Kimbrough, Cody Mitchell, Ashlee Gonzales, Baylee Shipman, Kevin Goines, Emily Stanford, Ripley Fernandez and Dylan Merriman.

He also is survived by two brothers: Clifford and wife, Mary, of Richmond, Va., and Elwood of Mineral Point; and a sister, Nova Brubaker and husband, Harold, of Altoona.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Elvin and Brice; a sister, Reta; two grandchildren: Terri Kimbrough and Derek Brubaker; and a beloved aunt, Nova Hoover.

Regis was raised in the Carson Valley Church of the Brethren and as an adult became a member. After graduating from Hollidaysburg High School in 1947, he worked briefly at a local bakery before joining the U.S. Air Force. He served honorably for more than 24 years with foreign tours in Germany, Spain, Libya, Japan, Canada and England. Upon completion of basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, he was transferred to Scott Air Force Base in Illinois to study radio communications and became an instructor. After sustaining a serious ankle injury sliding into home plate during a baseball game and subsequent recuperation, he was reassigned to George Air Force Base in Victorville, Calif. There he met and married the former Joyce Cowden, a WAF stationed at the base. Their 1950 marriage produced five children over an 18-year span.

A good husband, father and grandfather, Regis was faithfully devoted to God, family and country. He was well-liked and respected by the airmen and civilians under his leadership and rose to the rank of senior master sergeant. While stationed in Tripoli, he had the privilege of touring the ancient ruins of the locale. The old kings' palaces in England held a special interest for him, too. He developed a fascination with history and enjoyed reading nonfiction books, especially those dealing with military strategy and survival.

His lifelong love of sports was reflected in coaching both his wife's softball team to a base championship and his sons' baseball teams. He was an avid chess player and member of the U.S. Chess Federation. While in the military, he represented Air Commands in tournaments and won numerous trophies. He shared his enthusiasm for the game by founding a chess club for the youth of Moore, Okla., in later years.

In 1975, Regis graduated from Oklahoma City University with a degree in business management. After retiring from the military and a short stint in real estate, he attained a GS 14 level in civil service at Tinker Air Force Base. He retired from civil service to watch the birds and playful squirrels in the backyard and try his hand at small-scale gardening and landscaping.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at John M. Ireland Funeral Home and Chapel, Moore, Okla. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2011, at Southgate Baptist Church, Moore. Interment will be held at Smith Cemetery, Moore.
