He was the son of John Hoagland and Willimpje Voorhees , Henry Hoagland was born in Somerset County, New Jersey, migrating west to New York, where he married Mary Van Vuyl. They continued the journey, settling in Macon Township, Michigan. He passed away in neighboring Ridgeway Township, Michigan.
