Carlos Saavedra Lamas received world-wide recognition after being awarded the 1936 Nobel Peace Prize, according to the Nobel Prize committee, "for his role as father of the Argentine Antiwar Pact of 1933, which he also used as a means to mediate peace between Paraguay and Bolivia in 1935." This was the first Nobel Peace Prize given outside Western Europe and the United States. He received eleven nominations within a year for a Nobel candidacy. Born a member of the "Aristocracy" of Argentina, he was descendant of an early Argentinian patriot. After finishing his early education, he was a distinguished student at Lacordaire College and at the University of Buenos Aires, where he received the Doctor of Laws degree in 1903, graduating “summa cum laude.” After studying in Paris and traveling abroad, he began his successful career by accepting a professorship in law and constitutional history at the University of La Plata, where he began a teaching career that would span more than forty years. As the minister of Justice and Education in 1915, he instituted educational reforms by improving public vocational schools. Later, he inaugurated a course in sociology at the University of Buenos Aires, taught political economy and constitutional law in the Law School of the university, and eventually served as the president of the university from 1941 to 1943. Besides his educational career, he achieved recognition starting in 1932 as foreign minister of Argentina for his practical work in drafting several international agreements and in conducting mediation. During his term as foreign minister, Argentina rejoined the League of Nations after an absence of thirteen years. In 1938, he returned to his educational endeavors He married the daughter of Argentina President Roque Sáenz Peña. He died at the age of 80 from a cerebral hemorrhage. In March of 2014 his solid gold Nobel medal was placed on the auction block after being found in a South American pawn shop. An attempt was made for the medal to be purchased by Argentina, but in 2021 the medal is in a collection in Asia.
