Chris Curtis one of the founder members and the acknowledged driving force behind the band..'The Searchers' their name being taken from a western film starring John Wayne.Curtis played the drums and vocals and often would stand up to play his drums to give maximum effect, he also penned some of the bands songs.
Born Christopher Crummy in Oldham, Lancashire he moved to Liverpool, when he was four years old. His father bought him a drum kit whilst still in his teens. Curtis also played the piano, he met Mike Prendergast(Mike Pender) whilst still at school and they formed The Searchers with John McNally and Tony Jackson.
The Searchers did audition for Brian Epstein, but Tony Jackson was drunk at the time and fell off stage, not giving a good impression to the manager of..The Beatles.
The Searchers had numerous hits which were cover versions of songs by other artist, which were mostly picked by Curtis. They had international hits with...'Needles And Pins' 'Sugar And Spice' and 'Don't Throw Your Love Away.'
Singer songwriter Jackie De Shannon, was very impressed by The Searchers versions of her songs.
Curtis left The Searchers and became a record producer, he produced records for..Paul and Baryy Ryan, Alma Cogan and even issued a single himself.
He originated a band called..Roundabout,which later became..Deep Purple, when Curtis had left.
Curtis was devout catholic all his life and did not mix socially with other band members. He joined the Inland Revenue in 1969, he found it difficult at first, but stayed until 1988,when he took early retirement. It is the general opinion within the music industry, The Searchers did not keep up the momentum of their early success, a very talented band with a tight sound and good vocal harmonies, sadly they were badly managed and never broke into the lucrative American market.
Chris Curtis died age 63 at his home in Liverpool.
Songwriting:
No One Else Could Love Me.
Another Heart Is Broken(In The Game Of Life)
He's Got No Love.
I'm Your Lovin'Man.
Snakes And Snails.
