Scientist. A co-founder of modern mathematics, called "the new math," which he developed while educational director of the Computer-Based Education Research Laboratory. In 1944 he graduated form City College in New York with a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics. In 1949 he received his master's degree from Teachers College of Columbia University and his doctorate in 1953 from Columbia. In 1950 he joined the faculty of the University of Illinois and helped to begin to develop "the new math." In 1958 he was made a full professor and in 1963 he became director of the University's Curriculum Laboratory.
