Mason & Co., Syracuse, NY 1878, "Lemuel Smith, father of Rev. Marcus Smith, was the first blacksmith at the Square, settling here in 1800 and remaining till his death in 1817. His shop stood on the site of the present church (now the Columbian Presbyterian Church), the pulpit of which is said to be over the exact spot where stood his anvil."
