On July 4, 1790, Lemuel married Martha Withington, daughter of John and Desire Liscom Withington in Stoughton, Massachusetts. Martha was born on August 10, 1770, in Stoughton. She died in Stoughton on Nov. 5, 1846 but there is no gravesite.

According to the History of La Fayette, NY from: The History of Onondaga County, New York with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches. By Professor W.W. Clayton. Published by D. Mason & Co., Syracuse, NY 1878, "Lemuel Smith, father of Rev. Marcus Smith, was the first blacksmith at the Square, settling here in 1800 and remaining till his death in 1817. His shop stood on the site of the present church (now the Columbian Presbyterian Church), the pulpit of which is said to be over the exact spot where stood his anvil." (incorrect death date in article)

The stone is faded and has some lichen covering. It has masonic symbols and crossed skeleton keys probably representing the keys to the kingdom or a religious man.
