U.S. Congressman. He attended Wilbraham and Suffield Academies, was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, (1843-53) and then he retired from the ministry because of impaired health. He engaged in manufacturing and was member of the Connecticut House of Representatives, (1854-55). In 1855, he was elected as the candidate of the American Party to the Thirty-fourth Congress and as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving until 1859. Declined to be a candidate for re-nomination, he reentered the ministry, also engaged as editor of the Providence Press, Providence Star, Rhode Island Press and served in the Rhode Island Senate, (1870-71). In his later years, he was in literary pursuits and traveled lecturing.
