John March came to the United States from England with an uncle at the age of 14; after arrival they went to Columbus, Ohio. July 3, 1861 John March enlisted with the 20th Indiana Infantry and was later wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks,VA in June 1862. He was discharged December 27, 1862 and returned to Ohio, then to Iowa, to farm. August 6, 1863 enlisted with the 9th Regisment, Iowa Cavalary for three years.

September 20, 1866 John March married Mary Ann Dickinson of Franklin County, Ohio. 1877 the family homesteaded to Ellsworth County, Kansas. He moved to Ellsworth from the homesteaded farm after the death of his wife in 1911 where he lived until his death in 1927.

John and Mary Ann March had seven children: Emma, John H., Edward, Maggie, Melvina, Samuel and Charles.
