James Ammons enlisted for Civil War army service in Company E, 5th Regiment, New York Heavy Artillery, May 1, 1862. He was mustered out May 1, 1865. Rank: Private. He applied for an invalid pension based on his army service, April 20, 1887. It was issued as Certificate #545678 in Ohio. At the time of his death from nephritis he resided at 83 Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Ohio. He was buried March 30, 1901 in the veterans' plot in Section 72 at Woodland Cemetery. His widow, Sarah Ammons, applied for a widow's pension, April 6, 1901. It was issued as Certificate #523069 also in Ohio. Sarah Ammons appears in the 1910 U.S. Census residing in Ward 13 in Cleveland, head of the household, 74, a widow. Of eight children four were still alive. She was born in Indiana. Living with her were an adult son, a granddaughter, and two great grandsons.
