MACON: Macon, Georgia native, Dr. William Holmes Burns, noted Oncologist at Milwaukee,s Medical College of Wisconsin, died suddenly August 13th while attending medical meeting in Seattle Washington. He was the son of the late Henry Knox Burns, Jr. and Anne Holmes Burns. A graduate of Lanier High School, Yale University and Harvard Medical School. DR. Burns internship and residency were completed at Stanford University Hospital in California. First, he was engaged in Cancer research in England and with a Nobel scientist at the University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia.

Later, he accepted a position to the faculty of John Hopkins University Medical School, where, for fifteen years, he was involved in early bone marrow transplantation and research on cancer viruses.

Six years ago at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Burns became Professor of Medicine, Professer of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and Director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program, and in 1977 received the Robert A. Uihlein, Jr. Chair of Hematological Research.

Since childhood, Dr. Burns spent summers in Highlands, North Carolina where he maintained the family home.

Survivors include brothers, Henry Knox Burns, 111 and John McKay Burns; sisters: Anne Burns Sanford and Ethel Burns Shockley; 11 nieces and nephews; his grandmother; Mrs. Henr Knox Burns, Sr.; and aunt: Mrs. Leila Burke Holmes.

Graveside services will be held at 11 o'clock on Saturday,August 18th at Riverside Cemetery, North Gate in Macon, Georgia. Rev. McNeely will officiate. Honorary Pallbearers will be Henry K. "Trig" Burns,IV, W. Stuart Burns, Hubert E. Burns, Johnathan F. Burns, Michael N. Burns, S. Palmer Sanford, Christopher S. Shockley, Nathaniel B. Shockley Eugene Deloyce McIntyre, Jr.
