Ambrose Haffey Was RI Conductor
Ambrose Haffey, 73, retired Rock Island Railroad conductor of Estherville, died in Cherokee state hospital of old age, yesterday at 7:30 p.m. He had been failing in health for about two years and had been hospitalized at Holy Family hospital, then lived at the Gillette Nursing home in Estherville and finally was admitted to the Cherokee hospital about two weeks ago.
He was born Feb. 1, 1877 [Per WWI Draft records, February 21, 1877] in Brewster, Minn., and received his education in the Brewster schools and at Sioux Falls. For many years he was employed as a conductor with the Rock Island lines, serving on a run from Estherville to Sioux Falls. He retired from the railroad about eight or nine years ago.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic church in Estherville and of the local Elks lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle, who makes her home at Brush, Colo., a brother, Tom Haffey of San Diego; and four sisters, Mrs. John Schoos of San Diego; Mrs. T. J. Bender of Rapid city, S.D.; Mrs. John Corcoran of Redfield, S.D., and Mrs. Nick Henkles of Heron Lake, Minn.
Rosary services will be recited Sunday night at 8:30 o'clock at Sternborg funeral chapel, and Requiem High Mass will be offered Monday at 9 a.m. at St. Patrick's church with the Rev. Father J. H. Duhigg officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's cemetery in Estherville. The family has requested that no flowers be sent. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 29, 1950)
