Egid Merkel, farmer, born in Kuppenheim, Baden and baptized Egidius (Giles), was the son of Bernhard Merkel and Brigitte Stemmle. He came to the US in 1840 with his parents and siblings, settling in Celestine, IN. He died when a tree he was felling fell on him.
