LIFE OR DEATH WAS A MATTER OF A STEP FOR MRS FRANCES ULRICH OF NEWPORT; DRIVER IS HELD.
Life or death was a matter of a step for Mrs Frances Ulrich, 65, of Ninth & Brighton Streets, Newport, Tuesday night. She was one step away from the curb when she was struck by a speeding automobile, said to have been driven by George Sohnlein, grocer, 601 Isabella St, Newport, at Ninth & Patterson Streets, directly in front of the J J Radel undertaking establishment. She suffered a fractured skull & a crushed chest & died an hour later after she had been taken to St Elizabeth Hospital, Covington.
Witnesses of the tragedy assert that Sohnlein was traveling so rapidly that he was unable to bring his car to a halt until it had traversed a half a squire. He was placed under arrest by Newport Police & a technical charge of manslaughter was placed against him. He was held at the city jail all night as Judge Moore couldn’t be located to fix a bond. Mrs Ulrich is survived by two sons; Frank Ulrich of Saratoga St & George Ulrich, with whom she made her home. Both are printers. Her husband died several years ago.
