James Lowe was a Police Officer, classified as a Private, for the West Virginia State Police Department. He was killed in the line of duty at age 39. The incident occurred on June 23rd, 1926. State Troopers were guided to a Moonshine Still by a young boy, so they conducted a raid. The gang running the still, sighted the approaching Officers and opened fire. The troopers captured the illegal still, wounding two of the gang members. Returning that evening, the Troopers were ambushed, and Officer Lowe was killed. He was riddled with bullets. He died 3 days later in the Hospital. He never regained consciousness. Only some of the moonshiners were caught.
His West Virginia Death Registration gives his death date as June 28, 1926. The Officer Down Memorial page also has June 28, 1926, five days after he was shot.
